Emily St. John Mandel discusses Station Eleven

Image
A 2:29 minute interview with Mandel talking about her writing and life style. She talks about the importance of writing every day and how " The Road " by Cormac McCarthy inspired her to try a post-apocalyptic novel. This video is a little oddly edited, but it was interesting to hear the author talk about how her writing style differs from other writers she knows, and how she tries to find balance in her life. I found it interesting that she has a part time job for a "break from writing".      The author makes an interesting comment on the technological world that we live in. She says that sometimes to examine something, you must imagine living with out it. I found this really interesting because we have all read stories that take place in a period or world where certain things are not available. Looking at an item from the perspective of not having access to it, makes you realize your true feeling for it. I found myself thinking wh...

Interview with Emily St. John Mandel, 2014 National Book Award Finalist, Fiction

Station Eleven By Emily St. John Mandel Alfred A. Knopf/ Random House Interviewed by Lincoln Michel           This is an interview by Lincoln Michel, of the National Book Foundation. One of the more interesting parts of the interview is Mandel discussing the time she spent on survivalist message boards to find her research, and how she would not recommend this activity.      The interview then discusses the sudden influx of post-apocalyptic novels and asks if this is a movement. Mandel comments on how at the time she started writing " Station Eleven " there was not very many novels in this genre, but by the time she had completed her novel, there had been many more published and that she feared she would not be able to get the novel published.

The Atlantic Book Review

The Atlantic Book Review of Station Eleven   Joe Fassler Dec 17, 2014      This is a short review of the book " Station Eleven ", and then moves into an interview with writer Emily St. John Mandel. They talk about how having a novel that has won her so much acclaim is affecting her future work.     To sum up this review, Fassler says it best when he writes, (Mandel) "explores her own ambivalence, comparing the rush of awards and recognition with the inglorious, private struggle of writing itself". This piece really did not help me with the understanding of the book, so much as, with understanding this particular writers mind set, and views on writing. So in it's own way, it does help one understand where the writer is coming from, and why they may have written the story the way they did.
